Florida Times-Union Endorses John Thrasher in Senate District 8 Race
T-U: "Thrasher for Florida Senate: Keep a leader"
Jacksonville, Fla. –The Florida Times-Union today announced its endorsement of John Thrasher, Republican candidate for Florida Senate District 8. Thrasher is seeking re-election to Senate District 8, which consists of parts of Duval, Flagler, Nassau, St. Johns and Volusia Counties.
"Trading Thrasher’s clout for the inexperience of Gianoulis would put Northeast Florida at a crucial disadvantage," wrote the Florida Times-Union Editorial Board.
The editorial board also commented on Thrasher’s opponent, Deborah Gianoulis, stating that, "if Gianoulis were elected, she would be a political rookie."
"Thrasher knows the ropes. He is in the best position to represent all of Northeast Florida," the editorial board concluded.
"I am pleased to receive the endorsement of the Florida Times-Union today," said Thrasher. "Their support of my experienced leadership is the key difference between my opponent and I in the race for Senate District 8. The editorial board also rightly points out that I am in the best position to protect the interests of Northeast Florida, specifically receiving funds to protect the St. Johns River and protecting school funding from South Florida interests."
Thrasher currently represents Florida Senate District 8, which includes parts of Duval, Flagler, Nassau, St. Johns and Volusia Counties. He also serves as the interim chairman of the Republican Party of Florida. From 1998 to 2000, Thrasher served as the Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives, championing historic legislation, such as "Three Strikes, You’re Out," "10-20-Life," "A+ Education Plan" and the largest tax cut in Florida history. Thrasher was first elected to the Florida House of Representatives in 1992 and was subsequently re-elected. Additionally, Thrasher served as a soldier in the U.S. Army from 1966 to 1970 before he was honorably discharged and awarded multiple decorations. Thrasher graduated from Florida State University with a Juris Doctorate in 1972. Thrasher is married to Jean Thrasher and has three children and eight grandchildren.
