Volusia County Sheriff Endorses John Thrasher

Jacksonville, Fla. John Thrasher, Republican Candidate for Florida Senate District 8, today announced he received the endorsement of Volusia County Sheriff Ben F. Johnson. Thrasher is seeking re-election to Senate District 8, which consists of parts of Duval, Flagler, Nassau, St. Johns and Volusia Counties.

"After careful consideration of the candidates for Senate District 8, I am confident that John Thrasher will serve the communities of Northeast Florida best," said Sheriff Johnson. "Thrasher will be a staunch advocate for law enforcement officers and will fight to make certain that our officers have the tools and resources necessary to ensure justice is delivered and order and peace are found throughout our communities."

"I thank Sheriff Johnson for his endorsement and for his commitment to serving and protecting our communities and neighborhoods," said Thrasher. "If elected, I will continue to support the actions of our law enforcement officers, as they enforce the laws of Florida and protect our families, friends and neighbors."

The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office is dedicated to preserving the peace, protecting residents and their property, enforcing all laws, and detecting and preventing crime. With approximately 446 sworn positions, 438 civilian employees, 300 volunteers and an annual operating budget of $73 million, the men and women of the Sheriff’s Office strive to maintain the highest professional standards, while delivering a full range of community-based law enforcement and crime prevention programs to the citizens of Volusia County.

Thrasher currently represents Florida Senate District 8, which includes parts of Duval, Flagler, Nassau, St. Johns and Volusia Counties. He also serves as the interim chairman of the Republican Party of Florida. From 1998 to 2000, Thrasher served as the Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives, championing historic legislation, such as "Three Strikes, You’re Out," "10-20-Life," "A+ Education Plan" and the largest tax cut in Florida history. Thrasher was first elected to the Florida House of Representatives in 1992 and was subsequently re-elected. Additionally, Thrasher served as a soldier in the U.S. Army from 1966 to 1970 before he was honorably discharged and awarded multiple decorations. Thrasher graduated from Florida State University with a Juris Doctorate in 1972. Thrasher is married to Jean Thrasher and has three children and eight grandchildren.
